It’s the middle of a big bad raid boss fight and where are you? Lying dead on the ground – the victim of a massive boss AoE explosion/failure to move your butt out of one of the pulsating circles of doom that kept cropping up/being too squishy and not getting healed fast enough/etc. No worries! Your group brought a tree (or a forest of them) along for just such emergencies, and you know that any second now you could get the happy message that you’re the lucky recipient of a bonafide, 100% guaranteed Battle Rez. So why haven’t you gotten it yet? Before you start spouting off in vent or whispering wild “plz rez me” messages to your nearest tree, keep these things in mind:
- Casting Rebirth Takes Time. Not a lot of time, but time nonetheless where our HoTs are counting down off of the Main Tank, our Wild Growth is disappearing from the group, and our whole casting attention is on you – the dead person (no matter how much our eyes scrabble towards all the still-live raid members, we can do nada for them during that 2 second cast.) If we are smart trees, we are also trying not to time our battle rez during an AoE stun, any kind of silencing effect, or when we know the boss is about to explode lightning out of his pores in less than a second. So if we are going to rez you, you better believe that first we’re going to make sure all of our tanks have their HoTs, the raid has its Wild Growth, and the boss isn’t about to ‘splodey all over us. And that takes time.
- You May Not Have Died Underneath Me. In a battle like KT where the group is spread all over the map, you may have died as far from me as you can possibly get. And finding you, followed by trundling over to get you is extra time. Time I’m happy to spend…at the right moment (see #1).
- You May Not Be A Top-Priority Rez. There, I said it. You may be my best friend and/or spouse, who I cover in /hugs every time I see you in-game and out, but in a raid, you may not be the first choice when three raid members go down. For example, if one of those fresh dead bodies is a tank (and we’re not about to wipe horribly), the tank gets #1 insta-rez priority. Or what if it’s between you, the intrepid high-DPSing death knight, and TreeBark McBranchyton, another druid who I know has a battle rez available? TreeBark is gonna get my rez. Because then TreeBark can rez you, and we now have our high DPS AND another healer. So when you whisper me and I respond by rezzing the dead tree to your right, don’t be offended. It’s not personal. If I had a million rezzes at my fingertips, I’d always choose to rez you…but I don’t. I’ve got the one. And it’s got a major cooldown. Which brings us to…
- Rebirth Isn’t Always Available. Especially when we’re venturing into a new territory and getting our asses kicked left and right – I don’t always have a rez to give. Maybe on our last try we were doing really well right up until the wipe so I blew the rez on someone Ignis decided to make a “Crotchpot Fave” by sticking them repeatedly into his boiling cauldron of crotchy death. Maybe this is our first try on a new boss, so even though the rez is available, it’s not really available because “reading up on” (which really means, 25% of the raid skimmed the fight online, 73% either figured they didn’t have to because they’d be told what to do or are completely blanking on what they skimmed, and 2% actually know what they’re doing) is not the same as learning and doing, so I want to save the precious rez for when we’re not all going to be a pancake in 10 seconds. (I’m looking at you, Thorim!) If half the raid just wiped and your UI hasn’t told you that, I’m telling you – I’m not going to rez you just to get killed again.
And let’s say you get that precious Rebirth (after which you can be sure I will be throwing a helpful heal and Mark of the Wild on you to get you back in the game). Please, please don’t squander my time, my moving my attention from the rest of the raid, my hauling my tree ass away from my happy rooted home to find your dead corpse…by accepting the rez just as the boss unleashes a big old AoE bomb on us, killing the newly rezzed-and-therefore-squishie you. Thanks!
Note: Before you think I’ve gotten on too high a Battle-Rezzing horse, please be aware that I have (a) gotten annoyed about someone other than me getting rezzed, (b) accepted a rez only to die a half-second later, and (c) wasted my rez on more than one occasion in such a way that an almost-saveable situation became a flat-pancake wipe. I know your pain, dead raid member, I really do. And if there’s any way I can rez you mid-battle, know that I will. But if I don’t, it’s probably for one of the reasons up above…
