No PuG Left Behind

My assessment of Blizzard's new dungeon nerf. So much red!

I admit I rolled my eyes a bit when the Oculus pot was sweetened to bring in more happy business, especially since I’ve never had a PuG group really happy to be in Oculus, extra goodie bag or no.  But I pushed down my vaguely troubled thoughts regarding the matter (was a loot incentive really going to solve the issues of people being uncomfortable with vehicle combat and the “silent speedy run” groups being unwilling to explain things properly?) and moved on.

When I read this latest development, however, I couldn’t stay silent. Per Zarhym:

With that said, we plan on making some changes to The Old Kingdom in the next minor patch. For instance, Elder Nadox will only get one Ahn’Kahar Guardian and Jadoga Shadowseeker will only use her Ascend ability once during their respective encounters. In addition, a couple of the stagnant groups of bad dudes between the Befouled Terrace and The Desecrated Altar will be removed, while some of the roaming groups will have their pathing altered. These changes are not to make this instance easier, but rather to make it a slightly quicker run and more in line with some of the other Wrath dungeons.

I think you mean Anomalus. Yes, he will use his Create Rift ability less often.

What?! (more…)

That Defining Moment Thingy

My novelty suit from/for Tam.

So as active participation in Tam’s Christmas-present-syphilis-like-meme of bloggy exchange, I drew:

What was your “piece of wonder” moment (or moments) – the experience that defines everything that keeps you logging into WoW, the one you remember when you ask yourself “why am I playing this again”?

Is that all, Tam?  Sure we don’t want the answer to life, the universe, and everything, too?  (I have it on good authority that it’s 42.)

I’ve been thinking about it a lot since he posited the question to me.  And it’s made me realize that we humans (in our crazy, singular way) create relationships with everything around us. The obvious ones are those we have with other living creatures (those who can feel those same connections back at us), but we also create relationships with our homes, our workplaces, our jobs, our hobbies.  We have the same ups and downs, the same ebbs and flows of interest and disinterest, love and irritation.  And WoW is not immune to this.  Just take a look around at the WoW bloggers – we write feverishly, we are quiet for months, we vow to step away from the game, we come back from absences, we move on for good.

So just as there are a million moments and indescribable points of love and rage and perfection and failure between my husband and myself, between my career and me, between my family and me, there exists a million little reasons why the connection holds between WoW and myself as well. (more…)

Now That Was Fun!

Five people + lots of dead-for-real undead + one lovers' quarrel = HELLUVA FUN TIME

I once read that blogging is a form of conversation between the blogger and their readers.  If that’s the case, I’ve been lagging on my end in a major way.  For months, all you’ve gotten from me is a distracted, “Uh huh, uh huh.  Yeah, I gotta go.”  And “What patch again?”  Real life intruded it’s ugly tentacled head as I’d known from the beginning it was going to with moving and house-selling and new-job-for-pally and oh-crap-no-new-job-for-me-yet and vacations and general exhaustion.  In the midst of all this when I’ve logged on to Warcraft at all it’s been to raid or to poke around with secret alts so that I can’t possibly be roped into conversation/instances/dailies with people I know.  As a result I’ve actually attempted to PvP which has been interesting and even entertaining occasionally (newsflash Alliance: Horde doesn’t actually have it all together like we always thought – and they complain about the Alliance being favored, too!)  I’ve read all the usual blogs and a few new ones (Hello, Miss Medicina!  Wonderful work you’re doing!), but I’ve been the silent stalker, rarely putting a toe forward to actually comment.  In the world of patch 3.3 discussions and Icecrown speculations, I’ve felt like the kid who started watching Lost in Season 3 – completely adrift and confused.  And I’ll admit that I wasn’t helping myself out by doing my usual research into what was actually going on.  (Yes, I do research, even if that research doesn’t make it onto the page.  Doubters.)

So there we have it.  That was me, logging on last night post-patch to join up with my Fantastic Foursome and a guildmate to have a go at the newly added 5-man content. (more…)

Taz and her pally head to Europe...

Taz and her pally head to Europe...

Well, on top of all of the moving, leaving my job, and general chaos that has been attending my real life lately, I’m headed out to Europe for the next three weeks with my pally!  Hooray!

Sadly, this means I’ll be 50 steps behind everyone else on the latest patch notes, druid nerfs (they’re doing WHAT to rejuv?!  new badges already?!), and general fun-fun that is going on in WoW.  On the other hand, I’ll be having fun-fun of my own trotting around gorgeous mountains in Switzerland and hanging out in Irish pubs.  (We will probably not be visiting London, so no Big Ben…or Parliament…)

So while I’m gone, happy playing everyone.  Save me a seat at the WoW table for when I get back.  And enjoy the hourly mind-numbing trick-or-treating that comes with Hallow’s End, as well as all the joy of killing the Headless Horseman with his crazy laugh (that I still hear in the back of my head sometimes…trauma from last year’s Hallow’s End.)

In the meantime, I thought I’d leave you with some fun pictures:

My pally and I don our Murloc suits. A good time is had by all.

Awww, yeah. It can be romantic to play with the one you love.

Awww, yeah. It can be romantic to play with the one you love.

I’ve met tons of couples online who play WoW.  In fact, it always is a little surprising when I encounter someone whose better half doesn’t play.  Our guild is made up of a number of couples and our closest WoW friends are mostly married players.  I know this is probably my experience, rather than the overall bent of the game.  But for me WoW is a giant coffee-house for couples and singletons who like quoting Matt Groening shows and hanging out together after work.

So what is it about WoW that attracts twosomes? (more…)

Gandalf decides it's time to set some limits...

The wizard sets some limits...

I’ve been thinking a lot about limits and boundaries lately, both in-game and out.

Warning: Personal Stuff of the Type I Normally Don’t Discuss Ahead

Over the past month, my real life has grown increasingly chaotic.  My husband interviewed for multiple positions and found one at a university several states over.  Unfortunately, this now means we have to quickly sell our current home in a difficult market, which is proving to be both difficult (not surprisingly) and stressful.  We also have to find a new place to live and a new job for yours truly.  Meanwhile, our friends and family have been suffering through all manner of crises which we have attempted to aid them in dealing with – everything from the enormous trauma of divorce and death to the more minor concerns of setting foot into the ever-bewildering world of dating for the first time.

End of Personal Stuff of the Type I Normally Don’t Discuss

Needless to say, this has meant that WoW has been pretty low on our radar lately and WoW blogging, sad to say, even lower.  But our need for WoW, for that stress relief of dodging about poking pixels with sharp sticks and making other pixels feel better with the clever use of green swirlies, has been pretty high.

As I was pondering all of this, I put together a little guide of tips for knowing when and how to set limits for yourself. (more…)

The deer must die!

The deer must die!

Sometimes as I’m happily jaunting around Azeroth, stopping here and there to herb or mine or unleash vengeance on some random baddie, I will encounter a small, innocent, delicate critter.  You know the type – cute critter face, single digit critter level, low critter HP…  Awww!  Squee!

And at that point one of two things will happen.  In the first scenario, the Evil Closet Monkey (or ECM, for short) who lives in my brain will hop out screaming “DESTROY!”, in which case I will tear said critter in twain before skipping off to my next task.  This is shockingly often the case on my sweet, tree-hug-giving, nature-loving druid, and always the case on my anarchist fire mage.  (My one attempt at semi-role-playing, my alt hunter, is immune to my ECM and only kills sickly gazelles so they won’t infect the rest of the herd.)  In the second scenario, presumably while my ECM is off doing other things like sleeping or watching TV or knitting or getting up to whatever ECMs do in their brain-closets, I will get no such mental urge, and then I will pass the critter by with a merry nod of the head.
